A Tribute to Chris Rea
“I’m driving home for Christmas... get my feet on holy ground.”
It is December 22nd, and while the world outside enters the frantic final stretch of the holiday season, one of the most distinctive voices of our time has fallen silent. Chris Rea has turned off the engine.
Since the 1970s, he has been our constant companion. He was with us when we looked longingly into the summer sky "On the Beach," and he gave us strength when the "Road to Hell" felt crumbling beneath our feet.
But the connection was always strongest as the year drew to a close. We all know the feeling from “Driving Home for Christmas”: the weariness at the wheel, the red glow of brake lights in the snow, the restless patience in the traffic jam.
And then, almost like an answer to that struggle, he ushered in that very peace we all long for in our “Home for Christmas Eve.” He set the hectic pace to music only to lead us toward serenity.
His music was never mere entertainment; it was a compass through the various stages of our lives.
Today, the word “Home” has taken on a new meaning. Chris, you have now arrived where the “Holy Ground” is no longer just a lyric in a song.
As we play your records down here—from “Shamrock Diaries” to “The Blue Cafe”—we know: your voice will continue to bring us home, right on time, for decades to come.
Rock the heavenly halls, Chris. Rock in peace.
